U16 Ulster MTB Champ & our first A1 open road rider
What a week for KCC!!!
We’ve had excellent numbers out on the weekly club runs, we’ve gained a few new members and to top it all off, we’ve an Ulster Champ and A1 rider to be proud off.
Over the course of the weekend Drew Armstrong was busy practising and racing at the Vitus Enduro series in Bigwood Forest just outside Warrenpoint. He had a dry Saturday practise, however the weather changed on Sunday and the course got very slippy & sketchy in places due to the rain. Drew was racing under his single sponsor outfit Mechmonkey and he was seeded very well for the event, however on race day he had a bit of spill which ruined his chances of a top 3 overall podium, but it didn’t stop him winning his U1 category and the Ulster title – and all on the day of his birthday – WELL DONE ‘Hill Repeat’
On Saturday Michael Harkin was our soul rider at the Madigan GP, as Phil ‘The Doyler’ Doyle wasn’t feeling his best. Michael had a good race, however faded slightly at the end over the last climb to finish just outside the points.
On Sunday saw Andy McCullough attend the Billy Stewart GP in Lurgan, were he would be on scratch to chase the A3’s with a 2 minute advantage, but this didn’t put the A2 riders off as they worked hard and on the 2nd lap the A3’s were reeled in and some then tried to roll on through to get a break going, however Andy worked smart and held a good position throughout the race that allowed him to be in contention for the sprint finish were he pushed himself to the front and fought hard for a very deserving 3rd place. With the points allocated from this race it now meant the Andy had accumulated enough for him to be upgraded to A1 – this was truly amazing for KCC as Andy was already our first A2 rider this season and with being married in the md June it meant he was getting to as many races as expected, but he has still proven that he’s strong enough to get the required points to progress to A1 within three seasons of racing – WELL DONE – time for KCC to look at supporting our riders at a stage race for 2018 😉
Finally we’d like to wish one of our members a happy 50th this Tuesday (08/08/17) and to celebrate we are having a social cycle to Brennans on the 8th and back to The Poachers Pocket for a bit of craic – ALL Welcome – see details on KCC FB page.
